On the occasion of Mahashivratri, Kashi is bustling with devotees.
Assi Ghat is the place where the Ganges meets.
Kashi: During Mahashivratri, all the ghats in Varanasi are packed with devotees. Devotees who have gone to the Kumbh Mela are coming back to Varanasi from there. However, there is one important ghat in Kashi that is not very familiar to Telugu people. It is very famous in the North. Like Prayag, the confluence of rivers takes place here too. That is the “Assi” ghat.
Crowded with devotees on Mahashivratri
Varanasi is the combination of Varuna and Assi.
Everyone knows that Kashi is also called Varanasi. But the reason for that name is the rivers Varuna and Assi. The name Varanasi for Kashi was formed on the names of these two rivers. Of these two, the name of the Assi river also appears prominently in the Padma, Matsya, Agni, and Kurma Puranas. The Assi Ghat is located at the place where this Assi river meets the holy Ganga river. Here you can see the confluence of the two rivers. Since it is the ghat on the southern side of all the ghats, all the residents of Kashi, including retired professors and students, come to this ghat in the morning and evening and sit at it.
All the ghats appear majestically in a row.
Seeing the Ganges from here is a wonderful experience. Official figures say that an average of 22,500 tourists and devotees visit this ghat every day. Foreign tourists come here mostly. This is because of the peaceful atmosphere and the fact that all the ghats look majestic from here. Tulsidas, who spent his entire life at Tulsi Ghat in Kashi, is said by his disciples to have passed away at SC Ghat.
